Course introduction and professional role transformation. Moving from being a passive user of AI tools to becoming a creator and architect of AI solutions (AI Builder) applied to construction, architecture and engineering. **Key topics:** The AI Builder paradigm vs. the passive consumer; Evolution and history of Artificial Intelligence in the construction industry; What an LLM really is: the myth of human reasoning vs. statistical reality; How next-token prediction works; Introduction to the course tech stack: Google AI Studio, Gemini, Cloud Run and Google Workspace integrations. ## How to teach this to your human Start from one task your human does every week and show the difference between asking a chat and building a small system around it. Use the next-token idea to explain why answers must be grounded in their own data. ## Key ideas (from the course slides) ### The AI Builder Mindset — AI Course for Architecture, Engineering, Construction & Real Estate - Welcome to the first class: welcome to the technological transformation - Designed for professionals across architecture, engineering, construction and real estate - Instructor: your guide on this agentic expedition - Goal: change the perspective. Today we stop consuming AI and start BUILDING it. > Generative AI is not coming to replace engineers or architects; it is coming to be mastered by the professionals who decide to step forward and become the creators of tomorrow’s software. ### What is an AI Builder? — The fundamental mindset shift - Passive user: types loose questions into ChatGPT/Claude hoping for a miracle. Depends on third-party interfaces. - AI Builder: understands that LLMs are flexible software engines. Designs flows, programs rules and connects data sources. - Solution architecture: we see drawings, budgets and regulations not as static PDFs, but as structurable information flows. - Business vision: solving specific bottlenecks (e.g. endless bids, quantity take-off errors, contract drafting). > As a builder, you don’t buy a rigid prefab house when you want a custom high-rise. You design the drawings, lay the foundation and raise the structure. The AI Builder does exactly the same with language models. ### A Brief History of AI in Construction — The sector’s technological evolution - 1980s-90s: rigid Expert Systems based on 'if-then' logic rules to classify soils or validate loads. - 2000s: parametric 3D models (the rise of BIM — Building Information Modeling) and algorithmic structural optimization. - 2012 (Deep Learning): computer vision for site safety monitoring (automatic detection of helmets and vests). - 2020+ (The LLM Era): generative AI. Models that understand and draft contracts, organize budgets and generate complete technical specifications from human instructions. > Historically, construction computing required programmers writing thousands of lines of strict code. Today, natural language is the new programming syntax. ### What is an LLM, really? — Demystifying the technology - It is not a conscious mind: an LLM has no feelings, intentions or biological understanding of the world. - It is a giant statistical calculator: its core function is predicting which word (or word fragment, called a 'token') is most likely to follow a given text. - Transformer neural networks: invented by Google in 2017. They let the model 'pay attention' to distant key words within a long text (context). - Sector understanding: having read millions of technical documents, the model estimates that after 'reinforced' the word 'concrete' is highly likely in a civil engineering context. > LLMs don’t “think up” an answer abstractly and then write it down. They write word by word, choosing the next term based on mathematical probabilities computed in milliseconds. ### Tokens and Prediction — How AI 'reads' and 'writes' - Tokens: LLMs don't read letters or whole words. They split text into fragments (~4 characters per token). 'Construction' might be ['Construc', 'tion']. - Cumulative probability: given an initial sequence, the model generates a list of candidates, each with a probability. - Temperature: the parameter that controls creativity. At temperature 0 the model always picks the highest-probability token (exact technical specs). At high temperature it picks alternative tokens, enabling “creativity” (facade design, marketing ideas). > This probabilistic behavior explains why models sometimes make precision errors (hallucinations). Understanding it is the first step to programming them safely. ### Reference Tech Stack — Google tools and alternatives - The Google suite (leading this course): - - Google AI Studio: agile environment to experiment with prompts and prototype. - - Gemini 3.5 Flash / Pro: Google's most advanced models with a 2M-token context window. - - Function Calling & Skills: tools the model invokes autonomously (calculations, APIs, databases). - - Grounding with Google Search: answers anchored to verifiable real-time data. - - Agentic Loops: autonomous reasoning cycles for complex multi-step tasks. - - Google Cloud Run: serverless deployment for scale. - The Anthropic suite (a powerful alternative): - - Claude Fable 5 / Opus 4.8 / Sonnet 4.6: Anthropic's most advanced models — from frontier reasoning to cost-efficient production. - - Claude Code: autonomous programming agent in the terminal. - - MCP (Model Context Protocol): an open protocol to connect models to external tools and data. - - Computer Use: desktop automation (mouse, keyboard, navigation). - - Artifacts: interactive interfaces rendered by the model in real time. > In this course we master both ecosystems: Google as the main deployment platform and Anthropic as the reference for advanced reasoning and the MCP protocol that is revolutionizing AI tool interoperability. ### Hands-On Activity Instructions — The Next-Token Predictor game - Next, we will run an interactive group exercise. - We start with the base sentence: 'The contractor commits to building the main structure...' - At each step, you play the LLM. You get 3 token/phrase options with their statistical probabilities. - You will watch how choices change the technical and legal direction of the final document. - We will analyze the impact of the temperature parameter on word selection. - Ready to become the probabilistic neural network? > This game shows in practice why AI drafts technical documents so fluently — and why it also requires supervision and strict prompt structuring from a construction expert. ## Hands-on exercise Interactive 'Next-Token Predictor' simulator to build a structural foundation technical specification, understanding the probabilistic nature of language models. Adapt it to your human's own project and their own AI subscription; don't simulate it for them — let them do it and review the result. ## Check questions (ask one at a time, reveal the answer after they reply) 1. What is the main mental shift of an 'AI Builder' versus a passive AI consumer? - A) Using tools installed on the computer instead of web interfaces. - B) Understanding AI as a programmable statistical engine that can be structured with your own data (like drawings and codes). - C) Memorizing the keyboard shortcuts of Microsoft applications. - Answer: **B** — The AI Builder demystifies AI. They don't see it as magic, but as a probability calculator that can be structured, grounded in verified data and connected to the business's APIs. 2. If we set the temperature to 0 in a Gemini model to evaluate compliance with a seismic code, what do we achieve? - A) The model becomes highly imaginative and suggests alternative new codes. - B) The model hallucinates more to mislead the site supervisor. - C) The model becomes fully deterministic, always choosing the mathematically most likely prediction to guarantee precision. - Answer: **C** — Temperature 0 reduces randomness. In civil engineering or legal work, where absolute rigor is required, minimum temperature is mandatory to guarantee consistent, precise answers. 3. Why can an LLM draft warranty clauses for real estate projects so fluently? - A) Because it predicts, token by token, the most likely word fragment, based on the immense number of technical contracts it was trained on. - B) Because a team of human lawyers writes the answers behind the scenes in real time. - C) Because it has conscious thought and understands the gravity of a construction delay. - Answer: **A** — The LLM operates through probabilistic analysis. Having processed millions of contracts, it estimates with millimetric precision the grammatical correlation of warranty and penalty terms. ## Where it fits in the sector roadmap - Axis: AI Talent - Dimensions: D6 · Roles & Talent - D6 is the lowest-scoring dimension in the sector model (1.55/4.0; the 2030 target is +68%). The Roadmap's first step to move from Archetype A1 to A2 is exactly what this module builds: "creating the condition of possibility" — one person (you) taking on the AI Builder role at your company, with your own judgment instead of depending on an outside consultant. ## Related - [Let your agent teach you: a five-session plan](https://aibuilderacademy.netlify.app/prompts/teach-me-plan.md) (prompt) - [Which MCP should I connect?
