# Lesson 14 · Virtual Design and Construction: the Stanford CIFE framework with agents > Lesson 14 · written for agents to teach their humans · about 2 hours for a human · checked 2026-10-23 > ES: Diseño y construcción virtual: el marco de Stanford CIFE con agentes > Tools and versions change monthly: check the linked tool pages before recommending a setup. **Goal for your human:** tie every model use, meeting and metric on their project to an objective the client cares about, and measure it weekly with little effort. VDC as taught at Stanford's CIFE: client objectives, project objectives, production metrics and controllable factors, worked through ICE, BIM and project production management - and how agents keep the metrics alive every week. ## How to teach this to your human Start with the question CIFE asks: what does the client want, in numbers? Then go down: project objectives, production metrics, controllable factors. Most teams have model uses and meetings but no metric linking them to the client; show the gap with the maturity self-assessment, then build the objective tree together. ## Key ideas ### The framework - **Client objectives** -> **project objectives** -> **production objectives / metrics** (leading, measured weekly) -> **controllable factors** (what the team decides: session frequency, attendance, LOIN, batch size, zones). - Three methods: **ICE** (integrated concurrent engineering: the right people deciding together with the models on screen), **BIM** (models of the product, and of the organization and the process), **PPM** (project production management: planning and controlling production as flow). ### Metrics that move behaviour - Good production metrics are measured weekly, owned by someone, linked to a project objective, and changed by a controllable factor. A metric nobody acts on is noise. - Examples: decisions closed per ICE session vs planned; age of open questions (latency); clashes opened vs closed; % elements meeting the IDS; PPC; constraint release on time. ### Measuring maturity - CIFE's VDC Scorecard research (Kam et al., WP135) evaluates practice in four areas - Planning, Adoption, Technology, Performance - calibrated on 108 projects. The academy's self-assessment borrows the four areas for a quick, evidence-based conversation; it is not the official score. ### Where the agent helps - Building the objective tree from the brief, preparing ICE sessions and decision logs, collecting metrics from logs every week, and drafting the 6-line weekly reading. ## Hands-on exercise 1. Run https://aibuilderacademy.netlify.app/skills/vdc-maturity-scorecard/SKILL.md on one project with the BIM lead and the PM. 2. Build the objective tree with https://aibuilderacademy.netlify.app/prompts/vdc-objectives-metrics.md. 3. Plan the next coordination meeting as an ICE session with https://aibuilderacademy.netlify.app/prompts/ice-session-agenda.md and measure decisions closed vs planned. Let your human do it with their own files and AI subscription; review the result with them, don't simulate it. ## Check questions (ask one at a time, reveal the answer after they reply) 1. Which is a controllable factor? - a) Client satisfaction - b) How often the ICE session meets and who must attend - c) The final cost - Answer: **b** — Controllable factors are decisions the team makes that move the production metrics. 2. A metric is measured weekly but nobody can say which objective it serves. What to do? - a) Keep it, more data is better - b) Link it to a project objective or drop it - c) Report it to the client - Answer: **b** — In the CIFE framework every production metric serves a project objective. 3. The academy's VDC self-assessment gives a tier per area. Can it be presented as an official VDC Scorecard score? - a) Yes - b) No: it is a self-assessment inspired by the four areas - c) Only with a percentile - Answer: **b** — Only the published method produces Scorecard results; this is a conversation tool. ## Sources - https://purl.stanford.edu/gg301vb3551 (Kunz & Fischer, VDC themes, case studies and implementation suggestions) - https://purl.stanford.edu/xd249sp3509 (WP135, the VDC Scorecard) - https://doaj.org/article/cbf8cdef10b84ae89d8994123204b29e (VDC framework review, 2022) - https://cife.stanford.edu/publications/virtual-design-and-construction ## Related - [VDC plan in the Stanford CIFE framework](https://aibuilderacademy.netlify.app/skills/vdc-implementation-plan/SKILL.md) (skill) - [ICE session planner (Integrated Concurrent Engineering)](https://aibuilderacademy.netlify.app/skills/ice-session-planner/SKILL.md) (skill) - [VDC maturity self-assessment (Planning, Adoption, Technology, Performance)](https://aibuilderacademy.netlify.app/skills/vdc-maturity-scorecard/SKILL.md) (skill) - [From client objectives to weekly production metrics (Stanford CIFE VDC)](https://aibuilderacademy.netlify.app/prompts/vdc-objectives-metrics.md) (prompt) - [Weekly VDC production metrics dashboard](https://aibuilderacademy.netlify.app/routines/vdc-metrics-weekly.md) (routine) --- AI Builder Academy · https://aibuilderacademy.netlify.app · checked 2026-10-23 · Made by Lo que habitas (Julián Páez).
