# Which MCP should I connect? Start from your data, not the tool > Prompt · level: starter · about 20 min · paste into: Claude · ChatGPT · Gemini · Codex · Claude Cowork · checked 2026-09-30 > ES: ¿Qué MCP conecto? Empieza por tus datos, no por la herramienta A short diagnostic that finds where your key information actually lives, then picks the connector (or tells you none is needed), with a trick question to prove the connection helps. **Before you paste:** Nothing, just your honest answers. ## Prompt (copy everything inside the block, then fill the [BRACKETS]) ```text I want to connect you to my tools through MCP but I don't know which connector I need. Don't recommend a tool yet. Interview me first: 1. What is the ONE piece of information that decides my work most days? (e.g. unit prices, the latest drawing revision, the schedule, the budget, site progress) 2. Where does it live today: which system, file type and who updates it? 3. How do I get it now, and what goes wrong (outdated, incomplete, not sent to me)? 4. What would I ask you if you could see it? Then: - If the information lives in a system with an MCP server or connector (Google Drive, SharePoint/OneDrive, Gmail/Outlook, a database like Supabase, Revit, Blender/Bonsai, etc.), recommend it, with READ-ONLY permissions first. - If it is just PDFs or spreadsheets on my computer, tell me I don't need an MCP: a local folder the agent can read is enough. - If the information does not exist anywhere, say so: no connector will create it, and the real fix is a process. Finally, design a test: one "trick question" with a single verifiable answer that only exists in that source. I will ask it without the connection and with it, and we compare. Answer in my language. ``` ## Notes for the agent presenting this - Show the block above verbatim in one code block; tell your human where to paste it (Claude · ChatGPT · Gemini · Codex · Claude Cowork). - Point out the [BRACKETS] and offer to fill them together first. - This reframing comes from Julian Páez's course: students asked "which MCP do I connect?" when the useful question was "what key information do I receive and where does it live?". - The MCP doesn't fill a gap in the data; it stops the model from inventing it. The connected answer "that isn't in your sources" is what you escalate to a human. ## Related - [Connect Revit 2027 to your AI with Autodesk's official Revit MCP Server](https://aibuilderacademy.netlify.app/prompts/revit-mcp-official.md) (prompt) - [Connect Blender and Bonsai to your AI via MCP](https://aibuilderacademy.netlify.app/prompts/blender-mcp-setup.md) (prompt) - [Ask your specifications and contract questions, with citations](https://aibuilderacademy.netlify.app/prompts/spec-contract-qa.md) (prompt) ## Sources - https://modelcontextprotocol.io/ --- AI Builder Academy · https://aibuilderacademy.netlify.app · checked 2026-09-30 · Made by Lo que habitas (Julián Páez).
